A slab of real wood stood on its end with the bark left on along the top edge, so the outline of the tree is still there. The photograph is printed straight into the pale grain in soft sepia with the edges feathered away to nothing, and the wording sits alongside it in a loose handwritten face — the two examples shown pair a family picture with a few lines of verse. Because the ink goes onto the wood itself, the grain keeps showing through the lighter parts of the picture.
